Mission on Mimban Introduction
Jul. 28th, 2019 01:39 pmI did this analysis last year and posted it on my Tumblr: Random Thoughts, but I can't post an easy link to that when I'm referencing it to other people. So I decided to repost the series here.
Introduction, One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten, Eleven, Twelve, Outline for Mission on Mimban
The end of the first story of Rescue the Farmboy AU is in sight--and I settled on the title Liberation for it--so what to start next is bubbling up. Lucinda's story is outlined and I don't foresee needing a lot of research to get started on it. Then of course there's the next novel in Rescue the Farmboy's series covering ESB events. But I'm not ready to start another novel.
I've already written a short story for Rescue the Farmboy set after the Battle of Yavin and before Hoth. Another short idea I had was Luke and Mara getting the snot kicked out of them while on a separate mission and that finally gets rid of any lingering doubts over Mara's loyalties and also makes Obi-Wan move healing techniques up in the lesson plans. Nothing else gelled until I was fixing my Darth Vader issues in the outline and realized the background crazy from Splinter of the Mind's Eye can be that mission with a lot of tweaking.
First, I'm not writing a novel to fix Splinter. This story will be condensed. Second, I have to reread it to find what I want to use and what I want to drop in a black hole. Third, I might as well entertain people with my notes.
Splinter of the Mind's Eye is the first published EU story, conceived as a way to convince the studios that low budget Star Wars stories were viable should the first film flop in theaters. So Alan Dean Foster used a one-planet set, props that were built for the film, and the cast members who had signed up for a sequel. Luckily, what was later subtitled A New Hope become a phenomenon and we got the Empire Strikes Back. When the Legends timeline solidified, it was decided this story took place in 2 ABY.
Reading this story after ROTJ left an impression on me as a young reader to not go looking for the other early EU spinoffs (namely the pre-movie adventures of Han and Chewie and Lando). When I think about it now, it's mostly "okay adventure overshadowed by weird 70's sexism and shades of twincest." How will this reread change my opinion? And what will I find to change? Plus, if you guys have any ideas what I should add to the story, please let me know. I'm really good at chopping out what I don't want to keep, but less good with what to exchange it for.
